Target Audience
Distance learning students enrolled in Digital Photography II at SUNY Orange. Built and pilot-tested as the capstone project for the Virtual Worlds II course in my MA in Learning and Emerging Technologies (June 2020). Designed to address a specific limitation of online photography education: students taking remote photography courses often lose the hands-on, location-based, peer-immersive components that define studio learning.
Project Context
A fully built virtual island in the Kitely platform (an OpenSimulator-based virtual world environment, accessed via the Firestorm viewer). Designed to integrate with a Blackboard LMS module so students could move between the LMS, video tutorials, written guides, and the immersive world without losing context.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Understand the process of virtual worlds and meeting within the island.
- Record virtual world landmarks using the Camera Tools within Photo World.
- Effectively critique student work and discuss photographs for their artistic value (using the virtual world as a meeting space for live critiques).
Learning Design Approach
Photo World was built around three intersecting design principles: scaffolded onboarding, quest-based learning, and immersive critique.
Scaffolded onboarding. The first hurdle of any virtual world course is technical — students need to create an account, download a viewer, log in, navigate, and learn to take screenshots before any photography learning can happen. I designed two synchronous Zoom meetings to bridge this gap, plus two embedded tutorial videos (“Getting Started in Photo World” and “Navigating Photo World”) and a written navigation guide — layered redundantly so students could complete onboarding asynchronously if they missed the live sessions.
Quest-based learning. Inspired by gaming pedagogy, the world used NPCs (non-player characters) to deliver assignments. The first NPC, named “Professor Sam,” greets students at the starting area with a yellow question mark above their head signaling interaction. Clicking on the NPC delivers a notecard to the student’s inventory containing the quest instructions — borrowing directly from the visual language of MMOs to make assignments feel like adventures rather than tasks.
The composition quest sent students through a scavenger hunt section to capture five photos demonstrating: framing, leading lines, worm’s eye/bird’s eye view, fill the frame, and rule of thirds. The island also includes a portrait studio for portrait lighting practice and novelty objects (elephants, popcorn machines, fountains, NPCs) to give students compositional subjects to work with.
Immersive critique. The center of the island serves as the meeting space for live critiques. Photos uploaded to a shared Google Drive folder display via prims with embedded media, and students can click between images during the live discussion — turning critique into a spatial, embodied activity rather than a screen-share.
Pilot Study & Iteration
- I ran a pilot study with two students who completed the onboarding and composition quest without the synchronous Zoom meetings — intentionally, to surface gaps in the asynchronous instructional design. Both students completed structured reflection questions afterward. Two specific changes resulted:
- Conflicting instructions in the world. One student followed instructions written on a prim in the scavenger hunt section instead of the notecard from the NPC, because the prim text was visually more prominent. Fix: Removed the conflicting prims so students would focus on notecard instructions.
- Lost context between tabs. Another student had trouble keeping the Blackboard module, the navigation guide, and the YouTube tutorials straight — they all opened in the same tab. Fix: Reconfigured all links in the Blackboard “Virtual World (VR) Introduction” section to open in new tabs.
- A third surfaced issue — a student saving snapshots as
.tgafiles instead of.png/.jpg— led to additional file format instructions in the onboarding documentation.
Future Design
Key Outcomes & Impact
- Successfully built and pilot-tested a working virtual learning environment as part of an MA in Learning and Emerging Technologies.
- Demonstrated through pilot iteration that immersive worlds can address specific limitations of online photography education — specifically the loss of hands-on lighting and studio practice.
- Synthesized current learning-design research (Holmberg & Huvila on virtual world LMS integration; Sköld on embedded learning elements; Tschang & Comas on game-like quest design) into a working classroom tool.
- Produced a portable
.oarfile of the entire island for archival and future deployment.
