Here’s the embarkation-day surprise that catches first-time cruisers: you board around midday, but your checked luggage may not arrive at your cabin until dinnertime. For five or six hours, everything you need lives in the one bag on your back. Pack that bag right and day one is a breeze. Pack it wrong and you’re waiting in a hallway in a rain jacket you can’t take off.

This is the exact carry-on / personal-item list, Alaska-specific notes included.

What to pack in your cruise carry-on

The rule for embarkation day

Anything you can’t do without for the first six hours, or would be devastated to lose, goes in the carry-on. Documents, medications, valuables, and one comfortable layer. Everything else can ride in the checked bag that shows up later.

Documents + money (never checked)

  • Passport (required for Victoria, BC) and/or driver’s license
  • Cruise boarding pass + booking confirmation
  • Medallion / cruise card + lanyard (wear it to the terminal)
  • Credit cards + a little cash for tips
  • Phone + charger + a power bank, I carry the Anker 737 (terminals and ports drain batteries)

Medications + health

  • All prescriptions (in carry-on, always, never checked), a daily pill organizer keeps them sorted
  • Motion-sickness meds, take one before sail-away, not after you feel it
  • A small pain reliever / band-aid kit
  • Hand sanitizer + a few wet wipes

The “first afternoon” layer

You’ll be on deck for a windy sail-away before your bag arrives, so bring:

  • A warm layer, a fleece or packable puffer for the sail-away deck party
  • Sunglasses
  • On an Alaska cruise, a light rain layer if the forecast’s iffy

Day-one wins (the stuff that makes the afternoon)

  • Swimsuit, the pools, hot tubs, and thermal suite are open before your luggage lands; day one is the least crowded time to use them
  • A refillable water bottle (my Owala FreeSip)
  • Sunscreen + SPF lip balm
  • A book or Kindle + headphones for deck time

Cabin-organizer extras (toss them in)

  • A few magnetic hooks, cruise cabin walls are metal, and hooks instantly double your storage
  • A highlighter for marking up the daily schedule
  • A collapsible tote or day bag for port days (packs flat, saves buying one)

A packing-cube trick for embarkation

Put a complete day-one outfit (and pajamas) in one packing cube inside your carry-on. If your checked bag is late, you’re not digging, you unzip one cube and you’re set for the evening.

Cruise carry-on: FAQ

When does checked luggage arrive at your cabin on a cruise?
Usually within a few hours of boarding, but it can be as late as dinnertime on a busy embarkation day. Plan to be self-sufficient for the whole afternoon.

What should you never put in checked cruise luggage?
Passport/ID, medications, valuables, phone and chargers, and your boarding documents, all carry-on, always.

Can you use the pool before your luggage arrives?
Yes, that’s exactly why the swimsuit goes in your carry-on. Day one is one of the quietest times to enjoy the pools and spa.

Do I need motion-sickness medication for a cruise?
If you’re prone to it, yes, and take it before you sail, not after symptoms start. Especially useful before a flightseeing or small-boat excursion.

Once you’re settled, the fun starts: what to do in each Alaska port, the best excursions, and the gear that captures it all. All of it packs into the Alaska cruise capsule.
